Electrosteel Castings has consistently invested in backward integration, a strategy that has helped the Company to not only resist fluctuation in the input cost but also to lower it. In 2005, Electrosteel has successfully developed an Industrial estate in Haldia as a major supplement to its process integration objective with the establishment of a coke oven, a sponge iron unit and a power plant.

Captive Coke Oven Plant and Sponge Iron plant

Electrosteel installed a 2,80,000 TPA Coke Oven Plant and Sponge Iron unit (2 x 100 TPD) with stamp charging facility for improving the quality of Metallurgical Coke at low cost. This Metallurgical Coke is produced for captive consumption for its Blast Furnace at the main pipe manufacturing unit at Khardah, near Kolkata. It has also implemented a Sponge Iron Unit at Haldia to help in augmenting the hot metal output of the main pipe plant at Khardah.

Waste Heat based Power Plant

In addition to the existing 3.75 MW Power Plant at Khardah Works, Electrosteel has commissioned a 12 MW Power Plant at Haldia, which generates power using the waste gas of Coke Oven Plant and Sponge Iron Plant and supplies it to the Sate Electricity grid. Haldia’s 12 MW Waste Heat based Power Plant has been developed as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project since waste gases are used instead of burning fossil fuels for power making. This project will reduce appx. 78,000 MT of Carbon Dioxide emissions to atmosphere every year, thus helping in abating climate changes.

After going through the vigorous processes of preparing the PDD (Project Design Document), holding stakeholders’ consultation meeting, obtaining host country approval from MOEF and carrying out validation through DNV, on 15th December 2006 the project was registered with UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change) under Kyoto Protocol.
